Batman: Year One

Written by Frank Miller
Illustrated by David Mazzucchelli

Regarded by many as the quintessential  Batman story of all time. Frank Miller’s fast paced Year One opens with Lieutenant James Gordon being transfered to Gotham City, with his wife Barbara, from Chicago. About the same time, Bruce Wayne returns home after travelling the globe for twelve years training in martial arts, applied sciences, etc.. It doesn’t take either of them long to realise that the Gotham City PD is steeped in corruption and being controlled by a mobster boss named Carmine ‘The Roman’ Falconi.
Batman Year One is a complete back story of how Bruce became the Caped Crusader, from the murder of his parents, why he adopted the persona of the Batman, his recruitment of Lieutenant Gordon as an insider ally, and his first encounter with a prostitute named Selina, who would later become Catwoman. “It's not only one of the most important comics ever written, it's also among the best.” (ign.com)
